Counseling Services for Older Adults

The Outpatient Counseling Service for Older Adults Program is designed to meet the individual needs of older adults
(55 and over) seeking services.  Older adults face complex life changes that can cause depression and anxiety.  At times,
medical problems can increase the risk of a breakdown in emotional health.

treatment is designed to prevent psychiatric hospitalization or as a follow-up to an inpatient stay. Periodic treatment helps
to maintain clients once they are stabilized.

Treatment
Group therapy is the preferred mode of treatment for older adults.  It is our strong belief that interaction with others in
addition to medication management assists clients in getting better faster.  Sharing thoughts and feelings and getting
support from others helps clients to realize that they are not alone.  There are others who are experiencing some of the
same feelings of sadness, worry and grief.

Family therapy and education helps to bridge the gaps that occur between loved ones and friends of the client. Family
conflicts can occur when decisions need to be made about living situations, medical issues and finances.

Our goal for each client is to improve their quality of life by helping them to identify and process the issues that are causing
them distress.

Transportation services to and from the program is available.

Men's Therapy Group
The Tyrone Hospital Outpatient Counseling Services for Older Adults program provides a therapy group specifically for men, age 55 and older, who may be dealing with major life changes and challenges.

Who can benefit from participation in the men’s therapy group?
Men who are dealing with issues such as depression, grief and loss, failing health, relationship issues, stress, and displacement from work.

Why is a special therapy group for men offered?
For generations men have been socialized to feel that they have to act tough, never cry, get sick, feel pain, or get depressed.  While it is true that statistics show more women suffer from depression, the gap between men and women is not as large as generally believed.  The mental health needs of men are under-recognized and under-treated.  Part of the reason:  Men are less likely to talk about their feelings or seek treatment.  And some men may not recognize their irritability, sleep problems, loss of interest in work or hobbies, and withdrawal as signs of depression.  Men may also try to mask their feelings with alcohol or drugs, or work excessively long hours.  This means they might not realize they have a condition that can be successfully treated.

Historically, men are known to engage in activities that “bond” them with other men (i.e., hunting, fishing, football, etc).  Men can positively influence each other in tough times as well.  Through group discussions they can gain awareness that they are not alone.  Also, men are more likely to use such service programs when they are offered in male only programs.

Where and when is the men’s therapy group held?
The men’s therapy group is held every Tuesday at Tyrone Hospital Outpatient Counseling Services office located on the Tyrone Hospital campus at 221 Hospital Drive, Suite 1, directly across the parking lot of the main Hospital entrance.

What health insurance covers the men’s therapy group?
The men’s therapy group is covered by Medicare insurance.
