Tyrone Hospital Achieves High Scores for Quality of Patient Care

Tyrone Hospital was recognized by the Highmark QualityBLUE Lite Program for providing high quality care to pneumonia patients.  During fiscal year 2011, Tyrone achieved the maximum score of 100% in meeting evidence based clinical standards of care for pneumonia patients.

Tyrone Hospital’s overall score for fiscal year 2011 was better than the 83% overall score of other small rural hospitals in Pennsylvania and better than the 91% overall score of other small rural hospitals in the United States.

Tyrone was also commended for effectively developing a multidisciplinary team to analyze and implement quality improvement activities and for their clinical education and communication efforts around quality patient care and patient safety.

The QualityBLUE Lite Program is a performance improvement program for small and rural hospitals.   It is a vehicle that gives Highmark and hospitals within its network an opportunity to partner and work towards the common goal of improving patient care and patient safety.

The QualityBLUE Lite Program aligns with national quality organizations (National Quality Forum, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-National Healthcare Safety Network, American Heart Association, Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality), industry standards and guidelines, as well as evidence-based medicine to improve patient outcomes and drive to the provision of defect-free care provided by participating hospitals. The program focuses on key public health issues which have been identified nationally as areas of opportunity.

Tyrone Hospital participated in the QualityBLUE Lite program which involved the completion of one quality indicator.  The indicator addressed at Tyrone Hospital included the Pneumonia Core Measure.  The Hospital also participates in three other national clinical focus areas for quality monitoring including:  Acute Myocardial Infarction, Congestive Heart Failure, and Surgical Care Improvement Project. 

With the successful completion of the QualityBLUE Lite program Tyrone Hospital will now advance as a Level 1 provider within the QualityBLUE program.  Level 1 requirements include participating in the four national clinical focus areas in addition to one other program quality initiative.  

Tyrone Hospital periodically participates in meetings sponsored by Highmark where hospitals within the Highmark network share break-through practices to improve quality and safety.

By participating in the QualityBLUE Lite program and similar quality initiative programs, Tyrone Hospital is assuring patients, the community, staff, and the Board of Directors that the Hospital is providing the highest quality of care.
