Hospitalist

What is a hospitalist?
A Hospitalist is a physician whose practice is focused entirely on the care of hospitalized patients.

A Hospitalist may be involved in your care while you are an inpatient if the doctor caring for you requests their service.

Hospitalists Provide Many Benefits to You and Your Doctor
Since Hospitalists are in the hospital daily, they are able to keep a close eye on your treatment and recovery process. They  follow up on tests and adjust your treatment regimen throughout the day based on those test results. If you have an emergency while in the hospital, the Hospitalist  is already there at the hospital to address your needs. The Hospitalist is also able to spend more time talking to you and your family about your hospital care, since they are in the hospital full-time. You also have the benefit of receiving care from a doctor who specializes in caring for hospitalized patients. Using a Hospitalist also enables your  primary care physician to be more available to you in the office while the Hospitalist can be  more available to care for you when you are hospitalized and at your sickest.

Who are the Hospitalists at Tyrone Hospital?
Physicians who specialize in Internal Medicine provide hospitalist services at Tyrone Hospital.

What is the relationship between the hospitalist and my primary care physician?
The two doctors work together. Hospitalists talk to primary care physicians on a frequent basis. At the time of your admission to the hospital, your primary care physician calls the Hospitalist to discuss your condition and provides information the Hospitalist needs to begin your inpatient care.  The process is similar to what your physician does when he or she refers you to a specialist for another opinion or for additional tests and treatment.

During the course of your hospitalization, your Hospitalist and primary care physician may talk further regarding your treatment.

When you are discharged from the hospital the Hospitalist will communicate with your primary care physician to discuss your further treatment needs, help arrange follow-up, and prescribe the necessary medications.  The Hospitalist will also send your hospital records to your primary care physician.

How does the hospitalist practice work?
The Hospitalist will be in charge of your care and will see you every day to direct your treatment while you are in the hospital.  The  Hospitalist  is available to you and your family to answer questions and discuss your care.  The Hospitalist may consult other doctors to participate in your care as well. The hospitalist will make arrangements for any prescriptions you may need when you are discharged. You may be asked to make an appointment with your primary care doctor or with other doctors soon after discharge.  Since hospitalists do not have an outpatient practice, you will not have an appointment to see the hospitalist again after discharge.

You may contact the Hospitalist after discharge if you have any questions about your hospital stay.

What if I need another specialist while in the hospital?
Consultations from other physicians are necessary in some cases, and the Hospitalist can arrange for these as necessary. If you have already been seeing other doctors at Tyrone Hospital or elsewhere, be sure to let the Hospitalist  know so they can be kept informed about your hospital stay.
